Justin ran his first half marathon on Saturday down in Provo.
He was doing great with training until his trip to Samoa a few weeks ago (huge post on that coming soon). Even with that training setback, I knew he was going to be fine, but he was a little nervous. The highest he had gotten to in training was 10.5 miles, and that was about a month before the race.
He ran this race with a group of friends from work. He rode down with one of the assistant principals from his school, which saved me from having to wake the kids up at 5 something in the morning. But we still got up early and made it down to the start before 8 o'clock. Yep, 8 o'clock start time for a half marathon. It was the hottest day we've had so far this year, so it was pretty warm even when it started, poor guys!
Here are Justin & Christian (the assistant principal friend). This is the man I have to give credit to for Justin getting into running. He asked Justin to run the Ragnar relay with them last summer and Justin begrudgingly agreed to do it, mostly for the social experience. A year later and look at him now! He loves running!
Here's the whole group: Christian, Justin, Jackie and Kami (Jackie and Kami are teachers and super cool).
Getting ready to start. I love that exhilarating/nervous feeling!

After I took the kids to get our race day doughnuts, we found them around mile 3. They were looking great!
The next best place I could find was where they came out at the Provo River trail head, around mile 10. It was a nice place to wait with the kids, with the river, millions of dandelions and some horses to pet right next to the fence. Kami came first, I missed her, but she was nice enough to turn around for the photo:
And here's Justin, looking strong! He was doing awesome! You can also see Jarom in the lower left corner threatening with his "sword." He was making evil villain faces at the runners and pointing his stick at them and giving lots of them a good laugh.
Next we drove over to the finish. Here comes Justin. Haha, this is not the world's best picture, he looks like he's in agony! But he looked fine in real life. He was hoping to finish in 2:20:00 but finished in 2:17:17, so he was really happy and I was impressed!
Here they all are, feeling accomplished, as they should!

This is Demetrio Cabanillas. He was Justin's Spanish teacher in middle school and then Justin taught Spanish with him at the high school he was at a couple of years ago. He is a funny guy. He is also a super-star runner. He won the Deseret News marathon NINE times back in the 70s/80s. He set the record in 1982 at 2:16:57, wow! (I looked it up- there's an article all about him
here if you're interested, kinda cool)

And here is our other little superstar of the day! Jarom should be in the picture, but he was tired from a long race morning and wasn't feeling up to pictures. Makenzie and Jarom both ran the kids race, very spur of the moment, and Makenzie got 3rd place! She was very happy and felt proud when Justin said, "You got 3rd place in THOSE shoes?? Wow!" Way to go Kenz!
So there it is, Justin's first half marathon. Does he want to run a full marathon now? Yeah, I think so. I'm so amazed by Justin. It was not long ago that he was telling me that he, "HATES running and will never, ever be a runner." Whatever!
